Animal/environmentalist appeal
Unfortunately, the latest news regarding the Sicilian hunters. The Regional Administrative Court has in fact partially accepted the requests from some animal rights and environmental associations regarding the hunting calendar for the 2023-2024 season. The appellants are WWF, Legambiente, LIPU, ENPA, LNDC and LAC. What specifically did the TAR judges order?
The exception of wood pigeons
First of all, the opening of hunting in Sicily has been suspended, as regards the Magpie, the Blackbird and the Jay only for the period preceding the date of October 1st. For all the other species: wood pigeon, dove, quail, wild boar (from temporary hides) and rabbit, the dates remain unchanged as per the 2023-2024 hunting calendar.
Turdids and aquatics
The other decision of the TAR has to do with fieldfares, redwings, song thrushes and aquatic species: for these species there cannot be a postponed closure of hunting. It means that the closures requested by ISPRA itself will have to be respected, on 10 January 2024 for thrushes and fieldfares, and on 20 January 2024 for aquatic species in wetlands. However, there will be no changes in relation to woodcock.
