Law 157 of 1992
The National Hunting and Nature Committee, promoter of a sustainable hunting activity that respects the natural balance, expresses satisfaction with the government's decision to include in the 2023 budget law, which has just been approved, the amendment amending law 157/92 on the protection of wildlife and hunting. The uncontrolled proliferation of wildlife, e especially ungulates, today represents a harmful element for our economy and for our territory, also constituting a danger to public health. The spread of extremely dangerous diseases such as swine fever, road accidents and damage to crops and structures reported daily by farmers and attributable to the transit of these species have in fact made government intervention necessary.
The words of President Zipponi
On this subject, the president of CNCN, Maurizio Zipponi, in fact declared that: “Law 157/92 celebrates its thirtieth birthday this year and refers to a fauna situation that is extremely different from today's. Ungulates, in the past extremely localized and in much smaller numbers, did not represent a significant danger as they did not venture into anthropized areas, as is the case now. For this reason it has proved necessary to modify a part of the law that does not respond to the needs represented by the current situation". The CNCN also deems the concerns relating to the government's willingness to liberalize hunting without limits and borders unfounded, underlining the incremental extent of the activities envisaged for fauna control, which will be arranged on the basis of the level of criticality detected by the institutions after hearing the opinion of the 'ISPRA.
Finally, as regards the role of hunters, it is necessary to consider that the control and containment of wild fauna species do not constitute hunting and that the killing actions will be carried out only by individuals with a license for the exercise hunting and prior attendance of training courses authorized by the competent bodies, with the possible intervention of the personnel of the Unit Command for the environmental forestry and agri-food protection of the Carabinieri.
