The 2024 trial
The Monitoring Project of the fighting species It is part of the broader commitment of ACMA and the Italian Hunting Federation to promote scientific culture and the active conservation of migratory species. This modern approach to hunting is based on knowledge, responsibility, and dialogue with the scientific community and institutions. The project, launched on a trial basis in the Marche Region in 2024, stems from a collaboration between ACMA and the Studies and Research Office of Federcaccia Nazionale and is poised to expand nationwide. Its goal is to collect data on the number of birds present during the migratory passage and to explore the dynamics and migratory strategies adopted by the species in the region.
A first analysis
Through observation, census, and field data collection, participants contribute to building a knowledge base useful for the protection and sustainable management of this wild animal. An initial analysis of monitoring data, from the post-breeding period in 2024 and the pre-breeding period in 2025, identified key findings. Specifically, the analysis focused on data from observation sessions at observation points located in the provinces of Macerata and Pesaro-Urbino. These observation points coincide with hunting areas managed exemplarily by waterfowl hunters, which have proven to be vital for migratory species.
The contribution of volunteer hunters
Thanks to the contribution of volunteer hunters, who engaged in monitoring activities, we were able to define an abundance index for sighting periods (pre- and post-reproductive), the percentage of males and females, the species' environmental preferences in relation to weather conditions, periodic abundance, and the various migratory strategies. The Ruff monitoring project is ready to be implemented nationwide this year, so widespread participation from hunters is encouraged.
