A week ago the European Parliament of Brussels hosted the conference entitled "Perspectives to combat illegal wildlife killing: the role of hunters". The event was organized by Karl-Heinz Florenz, MEP and president of the Intergroup "Biodiversity, Hunting and Rural Activities", and it was an opportunity to talk about the various types of fight against poaching. The Italian Federation of Hunting presented a report illustrated by Michael Sorrenti, although other speakers were present to talk about the management of large carnivores in Finland, protection of the lesser swan and fight against poaching in Africa.
The Finnish example was one of the most interesting and it was understood how to reduce the number of illegal incidents to preserve the wolf population. Michele Sorrenti spoke about the national plan against poaching, the territorial surveillance of the voluntary guards and the project to reintroduce theIbis Eremita.
The European Commission appreciates the involvement of all stakeholders, especially hunters. According to Federcaccia, this message must be brought to the Italian institutions, changing the "emotional" view of the poaching problem. Finally, it is not enough to increase the penalties to solve the problem, but to study the problem more carefully.
