Hunting ammunition: No introductions are needed for what in the United States of America is considered the quintessential cartridge but finding it interesting to analyze a particular Federal loading.
di Emmanuel Tabasso
We have limited to the USA the maximum consideration that the historic 1906 ordinance still enjoys today, but on closer inspection it would have to extend far beyond the borders of the confederacy by expanding throughout North America, influencing vast territories beyond the Atlantic. The consideration he enjoys this cartridge it is certainly based on very balanced intrinsic values, born when the studies for a military use were closely comparable to those of a civil cartridge which sport shooters would have used in a wide variety of hunting situations. At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries there was another case with a length of 63 mm and it was that of the Swedish 8 × 63 cartridge used only in the country of origin for the Browning and Bofors machine guns, which ended his career with excellent results in missile weapons. The 7,62 × 63 had quite another resonance, this is the metric diction of the .30-06 Sprg. satisfaction. One of the reasons is represented by the nationalistic ideal that leads to support everywhere and in any case the home product, magnifying its qualities and ignoring the critical issues, if ever there were any; the other is the current custom of celebrating the positions in the warehouse after a few years by placing on the market large quantities of excellent material at extremely interesting prices. Imagine if we had a similar solution in place: the opinion papers would scream at the scandal and the imminent subversion of the democratic order together with the fall of civil values. The world is beautiful because it is varied, but we consider it preferable, because it is more relevant to our reality, the phrase of the unforgettable Marcello Marchesi who corrected it as follows: the world is beautiful because it is damaged.
Returning to our cartridge we will say that the definition good for everything, excellent in nothing is fairly truthful: in the past years in the mountains it was frowned upon for its scarce grazing and for an intrinsic precision not exactly optimal while it then regained a certain altitude when at chamois deer and fallow deer have joined together around the Alps and Apennines, let's leave aside the roes so there is really better, and then the king of the bush, the wild boar that today seems inextricably linked to this cartridge. In fact, the combination with semiautomatic or repeating rifles, especially the one in line for places where the other mechanism is not allowed, is the most used solution: here the shortcomings mentioned above do not count and then on the precision so-so there would be also to complain since in the test of a Browning Maral we had excellent results at 100 and 200 m.
The charge of the Federal taken into consideration is a little counter-current with respect to the customs prevailed among wild boar hunters who often prefer heavy balls with the standard of 180 grs to go up to 220 grs. As you know, the cartridge lends itself to a wide range of bullets, even seen from 125 grs to the heavier weight mentioned above, but remember that the most natural one is between 150 and 165 grs. where the features are optimized. With the Power Shok ball from 150 grs you can undermine, according to the manufacturer's advice, the wild animals indicated as Medium Game therefore with soft skin, but already of a certain weight: the mule deer, the white tail, various antelopes and the black bear are included in the range. We would also go safe on the wild boar because the ball has a soft tip that ensures a regular stretching together with a good mantle for the retention of the original weight, and finally a remarkable disabling shock ability: we remind you that this factor is not numerically codable, but widely verifiable on the field, relies heavily on speed and this bullet shows a V / 0 equal to 887 m / sec which become 798 at 100 yards, 713 at 200, 633 at 300 and 560 at 400 with corresponding energy equal to 389 kgm, 314, 251 , 198 and 155. With zeroing at 100 yards, the axis of the optics raised by 3,8 cm with respect to that of the barrel, at 200 yards it falls by 9,15 cm while at 300 it drops by 34,5 and for 400 it is wisely omitted the data.
It can be concluded that in short distance shots, such as the boar at the post office, the result with the induced hydrodynamic shock can be respectable: together there will be a decidedly lighter recoil than that determined by heavier bullets and therefore a better chance of doubling the shot.
