What the video traps showed
During the month of March 2023 the video traps of the Association I'm not afraid of the wolf filmed one golden jackal (Canis aureus) within the monitoring area of the upper Val Taro. This is the first documented case of the presence of the canid in the western area of the Parma Apennines, on the border with Liguria.
The sighting area
This sighting confirms once again the constant natural expansion of this species, which has already been present for some years in the lowland areas of the Province of Parma, and whose presence up to now had never been found in the western Apennine area.
The habits of the species
A protected species due to its great adaptability, the golden jackal is omnivorous and can feed both on small preys such as rodents, amphibians, reptiles, hares or birds, but also on carrion and vegetables. To date, therefore, there are 10 Italian regions reached by this small canine in its natural expansion (source: Associazione Io non ho paura del wolf).
