Hare hunting. Smart and strong, the hare is wild that has always animated the dreams of hunters. To capture it you need technique, experience, the right weapon and excellent knowledge of the place and the habits of the animal. Being accompanied by a good hound will make the joke of hare hunting even more fascinating and stimulating.
There are animals whose hunting fills the hunter with satisfaction, either because of the cunning of the wild, or because of the difficulty of the technique followed. An example is that of hare hunting, whose capture charges the hunter with emotion and pride, whether this happens in a completely fortuitous way, or whether the capture is the result of a well-organized hunting trip.
There are numerous techniques to be used during the hare hunt, which can be captured with the help of a pointing dog or even by batting, yet the most used technique especially in Italy is that of the post hunt, which is normally perfected with the 'addition of hounds. The dog is not necessarily purebred, and more often it is preferred to engage mongrels since in some cases they prove to be more powerful, strong and resistant. You can use them in pairs or individually, while the case of packs or groups is really rare. The presence of the hound, whether or not it is of race is still fundamental; not to forget the physiognomy of the hare, endowed with strength, endurance, particularly dense hair and hard bones. Even if seriously affected, the mammal usually manages to travel several meters before dying, while in the case of less serious injuries it is able to travel very considerable distances, making capture difficult, if not impossible. This is where the trusty four-legged friend comes in and will help find the game.
However, it will be good to remember that the hare hunting it is not a hunting activity suitable for everyone. One does not exaggerate when it is said that it is a real art, given that in addition to the need to accompany excellent hounds, patience, experience and competence, but above all a lot of passion, will be essential to hunt the hare. We remember it often, but never as true in this case: the hunter must have an excellent knowledge of the territory on which the hunt takes place, he must know all the habits of the breed well, not forgetting the weaknesses and surprising abilities. In fact, the game, especially when adult, is particularly witty and the only way to capture it will be to predict its moves. Only in this way can we behave accordingly, being in the right place at the right time. For this reason, the typical hare hunter is a man of experience, who knows the territory by heart and will prove capable of choosing the right places in which the participants in the hunt will have to place themselves. The hunter will also have to help his hound to find the track in case it is lost; after all this is not such a rare situation, especially if you hunt near watercourses or if you follow an adult hare. Occasionally the hare it can be shot down with any kind of caliber, yet the professional of this type of hunting prefers the 12 gauge with a lead 5 cartridge. to come out into the open. The advance is also fundamental, which will change according to the direction taken by the wild. This can run sideways, run towards the hunter, or in the opposite direction. In the last two cases, the advice is to aim for the ears of the animal, while in the event that the wild comes sideways the advance must be slightly higher. In any case, the speed of the animal and the shooting speed of the hunter must be taken into account. This is why experience, more than theory, becomes truly fundamental and manages to make a difference. According to the hunting calendar (art.18 law, framework 157/92) the hunting of the common hare, the wild rabbit, the hare Sardinian, as well as at the minilepre, opens on the third Sunday of September and closes on 31 December. Obviously it should be remembered that each Region, in compliance with the law, will be able to make changes to the hunting calendar.
