Expansion of the areas
In line with the objectives of the Plan for the planning of numerical control interventions for wild boars, the company assigned the service has started the installation of the cages and the repositioning and cleaning of those already present in the area of the Park of the Murgia Materana. “For several decades we have been witnessing the progressive and unstoppable numerical explosion of the wild boar and the expansion of its ranges even in areas where the species had never been sighted. The impact exerted by these animals – declared the president of the Park Authority, Giovanni Mianulli – both on the plant species and on the agricultural crops falling in the Park area, has increased significantly. Countering its increase was and is one of the numerous priorities for the Park for which I immediately committed myself by working on the notice to select the person who would take care of the containment activity of the species, managing all phases of the process from capture to 'killing. Today the company assigned the service has started a process that supports the implementation of intervention strategies for the eradication of African Swine Fever.”
A very fragmented area
The launch of the service is a fundamental step for a systemic approach to re-establishing a necessary balance of species within the Park and testing the sustainability of a production chain based on wild boar. President Mianulli underlined the importance of the support of the regional department, also confirmed in the launch of the new advice, in this specific context: "in an overall management policy of a complex park such as that of the Murgia Materana, with a very fragmented area of 8000 metres, close to different urban areas, and falling within privately owned spaces and with vocations ranging from biodiversity protection to the archaeological, historical and cultural heritage present therein, safeguarding a multi-level approach becomes fundamental.
Wild boar emergency
The foresight of not sacrificing one aspect for the benefit of another, perhaps considered primary, has been welcomed, understood and supported by those who can materially make the Park's work operational. In recent months we have gone step by step and the wild boar emergency, which risked nullifying any other activity institutionally considered more relevant, had a priority shared with the Regional Department which immediately made collaboration and concrete tools available that could implement condition of facing and reviving the plague known to us, but above all to the citizens."
