Last two decades of January
As you know friends, the Italian Bird Protection League (LIPU) in July challenged the resolution approving the regional hunting calendar of the Liguria for the 2022/2023 season in the part in which the hunt for song thrush ends on January 30, 2023, instead of January 10, 2023 as indicated by ISPRA. The lipu based its appeal on the last two decades of January claiming that they would overlap the period of "pre-nuptial migration" of the species in question, that is, according to them, because they return to the nesting areas, during which the exercise of the hunting activity.
Key concepts
This figure emerges from the latest update of the document ("Key Concepts Document") in which the EU Commission indicated, on the basis of the data provided by the individual States, the beginning decades of the "prenuptial migration" of huntable bird species. In fact, ISPRA in its opinion sent to the Liguria region with a note dated 28 April 2022, specified that the Key Concepts Document 2021 had updated the return period to the breeding sites of the migratory species in question, bringing it forward to the third decade of December.
Demographic trend of song thrush
However, considering the need to set a single closing date for hunting for similar species and the stable demographic trend of song thrush, ISPRA believed that the hunting date of this species could have been extended to 10 January 2023. Well after all the usual cinema, the Liguria region won the tar by deviating from the opinion of the ISPRA and setting the end of the song thrush hunt at 30 January 2023 (honorable Barbara Mazzali, regional councilor of Lombardy)
