The President FACE Torbjörn Larsson presented FACE's vision for conservation at the conference "Crossroads: Leading the Way for Wildlife Conservation" organized in conjunction with the 66th General Assembly of the CIC which took place from 2 to 4 May in Windhoek, Namibia. FACE represents the interests of 7 million European hunters through the 36 member hunter associations. Referring to the problem of biodiversity loss in Europe, Torbjörn Larsson stated that hunters and national hunting associations are aware of thesignificant impact of agriculture and other land uses on many huntable species in Europe.
He then added that European hunters are particularly concerned about the populations of small game which are dramatically declining. President Larsson stressed that Europe, through its forthcoming Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), must devote greater efforts to the protection of biodiversity, and in particular to small game species such as Gray Partridge, Hare, Dove. Another important issue for European hunters is the return of some large carnivore populations. This is the result of a successful conservation policy, but one that also brings conflict. Emphasize the need for greater flexibility regarding the implementation of EU laws which should consider specific local, regional and national circumstances to reduce conflicts between people and large carnivores.
President Larsson further explained that the protection status of some populations of large carnivore species in the EU, such as the wolf and the brown bear in some Member States, it can be modified to allow for pragmatic and efficient conservation strategies. Torbjörn Larsson also added that through its associates, FACE is currently active in raising awareness on these issues during the European Parliament elections. He has declared: "FACE's mission is to promote and protect hunting in Europe, mainly through the EU institutions: decisions taken in Brussels have a decisive impact on the direction that Member States give to environmental policies and this has enormous effects on hunting and hunters in Europe: 85% of the rules concerning the 'environment and hunting come from Brussels “.
