A rare event
Its symbolic animal is the ibex, but for some time now it has been another species that has been attracting the most attention. In the Gran Paradiso National Park, to be precise, on the Turin side of this natural area that covers Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta, the lynx has suddenly returned. This is a rare event like never before, also because the historical precedents are very distant in time.
The last historical sighting
The last certain data on the presence of this predator in the park in question dates back to 1916, therefore 107 years ago. The return after more than a century was confirmed by a camera trap that leaves no room for doubt. However, the park authority has maintained maximum confidentiality regarding the exact location of the sighting, so as to investigate the case further.
The possibilities of mating
However, some hypothetical sightings of lynxes had already been reported in recent years, but for the first time there is certain proof. According to what was reported by the director of the park, Bruno Bassano, with this return it could be possible to establish at least one breeding pair, for what is undoubtedly an iconic but too often forgotten species.
