Wild boars, from problem to opportunity. The first pilot project wanted by the Department of Agricultural and Forestry Policies of the Basilicata region for the creation of a Lucanian boar meat supply chain. In the presence of the Regional Councilor for Agriculture, Francesco Fanelli, the FMF company of Picerno, has delivered the first wild boars, taken from the selecontrollers, to the game processing center in the industrial area of Tito. An appointment that concretely marks the start of the regional project started in September 2020 following a public notice, financed with an investment of 150 thousand euros.
An important step forward also the result of the resolution approved last January 12, again by the Regional Council on the proposal of the councilor Fanelli, containing the management plans of the Sus Scrofa species which provides for the annual plan for selection hunting for the year 2021, and the three-year control plan 2021-2023. “The presence of numerous wild boars in some areas of Basilicata - says Fanelli - causes heavy damage to many farms and causes serious road accidents. For this reason, in addition to ordinary measures, such as the control plan, we have implemented a series of actions that allow us to look to the future with greater confidence.
With the conferment, the transformation process begins which will allow the company that has been awarded the public notice to be able to produce quality products based on wild boar meat and to offer them on the local, national and international market ". "With this supply chain project - underlines Fanelli - we tried to turn a problem into an economic opportunity. An important contribution to reducing the presence of wild boars in the area and we also give a Lucanian company the opportunity to grow by making a quality Lucanian product travel all over the world ". “Obviously all this is not enough. We are already thinking about other measures on the prevention and we wait, however - Fanelli concludes - for the national government to play its part as well ”.
