A plan that is causing a lot of talk, not only within regional borders. There Province of Teramo approved two days ago, Saturday 19 March 2016, on containment of foxes in the Abruzzo area, after finding that animals exceed the desired limits by more than nine times. Talking about it is also Il Sole 24 Ore and the matter has been investigated in every detail. The Confindustria newspaper used it ironically the term "Teramoshire" to compare the province to Yorkshire, the ancient English county where fox hunting is an established and centuries-old tradition.
The plan calls for the killing of foxes until next April 10th, using the methods that have been provided by the local authority itself. The management of the entire program will be entrusted to Territorial Areas of Hunting of Vomano and Salinello (at the center of other debates for the controversy against the Region): to prepare it, it was decided to take a cue from the last census of the species. In detail, the average density of the fox for the Salinello institutes has reached share 5 foxes every eight square kilometers, which means there are 1,8 specimens per square kilometer and a maximum of 9,4 foxes.
The numbers were defined as worrying and excessively high and the same speech was also made by the Vomano institutes. What are the objectives to be achieved with the Teramo's plan? The ATCs plan to reduce this density and keep it at one fox per square kilometer, so as to have a scenario to face without excessive problems. The Volunteer Wildlife Guards will collaborate in this case together with the Ecological Guards and there will also be the Provincial Police, a body at risk of elimination but which has been entrusted with the supervision of the plan: everyone will have the opportunity to hunt the fox through the turn technique and making the most of three dogs for each team.
Among other things, it should not be forgotten that the overall density that has been calculated for all the reserves of the province in question is close to 360 animals. In the Restocking and Capture Areas and in the dog-loving areas of the Vomano there are 400 specimens of fox. The plan was motivated also and above all by the damage caused by foxes to the agricultural sector (not just the other mauled animals) and to the breeders. The killing will last three weeks and will continue until December 2019. Animal rights activists and environmentalists are already on a war footing and reactions and protests are expected, so there will be updates on the story.
