It's been six years since the last catch and now there Province of Biella is seriously considering repeating the activity for what concerns the nourish. Rodents are numerous especially in the Lower Biellese area, although sightings and reports are not lacking throughout the provincial territory. Damage to crops is once again a fact: the record of catches dates back to the period between 2004 and 2011, the local authority has therefore prepared a new plan for eradication of the species.
Based on the provisions of ISPRA, in the Piedmontese province the severity index is equal to 5 (the maximum is 10), although there is no real census. In some areas the otters have disappeared thanks to deployment of cages, moreover, in the last two years there have been no reports as regards the area of Lake Viverone. On the plain, however, things are worse. This means that the problem was not 100% resolved.
In recent years there have been operational difficulties due to the absence of volunteers for the control of otters, but the current situation advises against any type of interruption. In addition to the staff of the province and the forest guards, farmers with a hunting license are involved: in the case of sighting in the city, it will be necessary to use only the cages and traps to protect public safety.
