The message launched by Paul Castelluccio, vice president of Regional Council of Basilicata, it is very clear. Farmers' exasperation which was accentuated by thewild boar emergency demonstrates how the control plan relating to the province of Matera is not adequate and effective. Herds of ungulates continue to approach farms and the threats to farmers themselves and their families have become serious.
Castelluccio recalled the difficult coexistence with wildlife, spreading out the data relating to last year. Effectively, since 2016, 7300 wild boars have been killed throughout the Lucanian territory, while the damage to crops in the period between 2010 and 2015 amounted to 3,2 million euros. The compensation established so far by the Region can cover just under one third of the damages recognized, with limitations that concern only the "priority" species.
The vice president also added how the valuable crops are in danger in the coming summer months, hoping for an extraordinary plan of interventions to balance the density of wild boars in Basilicata. Operations should be about above all parks and protected areas, keeping an eye on other ungulates as well.
