Hic Sunt Wolves
“The return of the wolf to Salento: let's get to know him”. This is the title of the event organized by Hic Sunt Lupi, the wolf study, monitoring and management project in Salento, financed by the environmental department of the Puglia Region in collaboration with Cnr – Iret of Lecce and Sapienza University of Rome. It will be held on Wednesday 3 April, at 18.00 pm, at the Bernardini library (Convitto Palmieri) in Lecce, with free admission.
Fair disclosure
After the greetings of Anna Grazia Maraschio, councilor for the environment of the Puglia Region, and the mayor of Lecce Carlo Salvemini, the event will begin with a cycle of speeches featuring Paolo Ciucci, associate professor of the Sapienza University of Rome, Charles Darwin Department, and member Hic Sunt Lupi; Francesco Cozzoli and Francesco De Leo, researchers at the Cnr – Iret of Lecce and scientific managers of Hic Sunt Lupi; Ruben Cataldo, archaeologist and president of Archeo-Rec. A meeting of scientific dissemination and correct information that will explain the reasons for the return of this great predator to the Salento area and how to start learning about its habits, behaviors and the historical aspects that linked its presence to Salento.
Installation of camera traps
“Fear and curiosity, distrust and fascination, legend and truth. No other animal arouses as many conflicting emotions in us as the wolf. And now he has returned to Salento. Let's get to know him. We are opening a cycle of information meetings to learn more about this predator and the reasons for its return to this territory, after a century of absence", explain the team of researchers. In addition to the information meetings, the Hic Sunt Lupi project has entered its operational study and monitoring phase, in a first phase which sees the installation of camera traps and inspections for the collection of facts, in order to understand the wolf's diet in the area and start to have the first elements for a management proposal (source: Puglia Region).
