“In the last few years the damage to the production grapes of the Vernaccia DOCG of San Gimignano - says Roberto Vivarelli President of ATC 3 Siena Nord - a territory particularly affected by damage from ungulates and especially from roe deer, despite the numerous actions to contain the species in selection hunting. For this reason, in a series of meetings that saw the whole territory compact to the safeguard of one of the Tuscan wine excellences and the strong involvement of the institutions, the Region, the Province, the Municipality, ATC and agricultural and hunting associations united to save Vernaccia's production.
A great "team" work that made it possible in a very short time to reconvert the Restocking and Capture Area within the Municipality of San Gimignano in the Venatory Respect Area; everyone has done their part. A transformation that will allow already from the beginning of August to intervene in selection hunting on the roe deer species to bring the density back to acceptable numbers. We must do whatever is necessary for save the excellence of these our territories. We cannot accept that such a significant presence of roe deer jeopardizes an important economy such as that of the San Gimignano area ”.
"We are aware of the particularly serious damage to the vineyards that the companies in the area are suffering due to the increase in ungulates that in spring graze the vegetative apexes of plants, vines, and during the harvest period compromise the grape harvest - said the vice president Saccardi - For this we have decided to create the conditions for initiate plans for the rebalancing of the fauna so that, in a controlled and guaranteed way, it is also possible to protect the productions of companies that are already bent, in other ways, from the pandemic emergency ".
