La province of Viterbo is the one with the greatest concentration of wild boars of Lazio. This is what emerges from the documents attached to the plan for the containment of swine fever approved by the Region in recent days. According to the tables contained in the document in Viterbo there is an estimated population of wild boars of 24.345 heads, the highest number in Lazio where in all they are 74.223 (13.257 Frosinone, 6.285 Latina, 13.866 Rieti and 16.380 Rome). The killings reported so far for the 2021-2022 season in Viterbo are 8.145: 7.792 in hunted, 63 with the turn, 251 in white areas and 39 (partial data) with the selection.
The Region's plan to try to contain swine fever provides for an increase in the withdrawal of 30% compared to the average for the three-year period 2019-2021. In short, making an estimate we are talking about 2.350 more ungulates that can be killed according to the special discipline that the Region has issued with the plan approved on 14 June. In fact, according to the tables contained in the provision in the 2019-2020 season, 7.885 wild boars were killed in Tuscia and in the following season 7.536. This is always the highest number in the Region. The purpose of the "Surveillance and prevention plan in Italy for 2021" is that of a generalized reduction in the density of wild boar, through an increase in the collection of 30% by means of selection hunting (selective shooting), endorsement, hunting in white areas and control activities, compared to previous years.
The plans of selective withdrawal and numerical controls already authorized and under construction. Currently the only control plan in progress outside the Protected Areas is the ATC Viterbo 1 plan. Ultimately, as stated in the plan, "the area identified as being at greatest risk (wild boar density, exposure to risky contacts) is that of the province of Viterbo (Atc Vt1 and Vt2), of Rieti and of Rome (Atc Rm1) where jokes must be organized, to be carried out with the use of adequately trained personnel.
Beyond swine fever, the data on compensation paid to farmers in recent years due to damage caused by wild boars. ATC Viterbo 1 in 2018 compensated 51 companies for 110.968,61 euros, ATC Viterbo 2 paid 46.323,64 in compensation to 24 companies. In 2019 50.779,45 euros for the ATC Viterbo 2 (58 companies) and 95.459,60 euros (27 companies) for Viterbo 2. For 2020, the requests of 100 companies between the two Atc have been accepted for almost 220 thousand euros estimated damage (Courier of Viterbo).
