The stance
In the last few hours the campaign was presented at a press conference in Pescara WWF Abruzzo "Nature is admired, not killed" against the selective hunting of red deer and roe deer. The association is railing against these levies and the reasons it has given are of different types.
The population of ungulates
In particular, according to the WWF Abruzzo, "Knowledge on the populations of red deer and roe deer in Abruzzo is, in fact, fragmentary and incomplete, in the same Wildlife Plan approved by the Abruzzo Region the need to start a monitoring activity is highlighted, so much so that for Cervo only experimental districts are defined in the light of the scarce knowledge of the size and dynamics of the population. In order to define the times and methods for collecting individuals from faunal populations, exhaustive and detailed information is needed regarding the distribution of the species concerned on the regional territory, as well as regarding the numerical consistency of the populations, the respective temporal variations and the numerical relationships between individuals of the both sexes and between different age groups.
Monitoring activities
The WWF continues: "Therefore, the execution of a monitoring activity which in a few months should describe the status of the populations of red deer and roe deer, define the optimal densities of presence, draw up a sampling plan does not seem credible: in fact , regardless of the results that will be obtained from the field activities, the regional council has already decided to include the selection hunt for red deer and roe deer in the next hunting calendar. This is an unacceptable non-scientific approach! With regard to the alleged damage that these species can cause to crops and the danger of road accidents, issues to be taken seriously and carefully into consideration, it is certainly necessary to start a serious monitoring program and prepare a prevention plan, which however is never mentioned" .
Mode of procedure
Finally, how to proceed is suggested: "There are many actions, by now known and known, which can be implemented to limit the risk of damage and the frequency of road accidents: implement the use of fences or various types of repellents, put acoustic and visual deterrents are in place, upgrade the underpasses, build the overpasses… The funds committed by the Abruzzo Region to start the demolition could be much more profitably allocated to this type of action. We are sure that most of the Abruzzo people will be on the side of the deer and roe deer and will want to continue to see them free to move in the mountains and woods of Abruzzo".
