The choice of the Region
Liguria Region suspends the effectiveness of the contiguous area classification of Portofino Regional Natural Park. This was approved by the regional council to reduce restrictions and facilitate wild boar hunting in the area outside the protected area of the Park, as part of the regional five-year plan which aims to contain the invasion of ungulates and swine fever. For the Liguria Region, "as already repeatedly reported by the local administrations", the contiguous area represents a "highly critical area due to the widespread presence of wild boars, which represent a serious cause of damage to the protection of crops, the minute infrastructures of the territory, landscape values and public safety".
Favorable opinion
The Portofino Park Authority, with a decree from the president, expressed a favorable opinion on the suspension of the contiguous area that the Liguria Region established for the entire duration of the Priu approved last December and "in any case no later than 6 December 2027", subject to verification on that date.
High concentration of wild boars
"The contiguous area of the Portofino Regional Natural Park falls within the area subject to restrictions for the control and eradication of swine fever, in which wild boar hunting is permitted in any form - explains the resolution illustrating the situation that led to the suspension of classification - the contiguous area of the Portofino Park is characterized by a significant concentration of wild boar, which requires a large number of control interventions to protect public safety and agroforestry-pastoral activities and makes it difficult to collect wild boar inside of the same contiguous area during the hunting season, due to the small number of wild boar hunters residing in the municipalities of the Park and the contiguous area. It is a priority to pursue the achievement of the objectives for reducing the wild boar population set by the National ASF surveillance plan and by the Liguria Region plan” (source: Liguria Region).
