Despite the difficulties associated with the general wildlife planning of theElba island and the recent provisions relating to African swine fever, the Tuscan Archipelago National Park has continued its actions to limit the negative impact due to the presence of populations of ungulates that are now excessive and extremely harmful to the environmental, economic and social context on the Island of Elba. A constant commitment, increasingly shared and supported by the Municipalities and from the wide array of local stakeholders who ask, together with the Park, to declare the island of Elba an area not suitable for wild boar.
The activities carried out during 2021 to enhance the Natura 2000 sites through the organization of events-meetings for activities related to the knowledge of flora and fauna protected by EU directives included in all the events of “Vivere il Parco 2021; the removal of Aleppo pines now sick and unstable and the subsequent planting of holm oaks in Pianosa. In October 2021 the Park Authority activated an agreement with the University of Pisa, Department of Agricultural, Food and Agro-environmental Sciences (DiSAAA) for the genetic study of two horticultural species of the Isola del Giglio for the purpose of recovering these ancient varieties.
The PNAT, also as manager of the Mab Unesco Isole di Toscana Biosphere Reserve, supports the enhancement of sustainable rurality and typical productions in the past. Previously, he conducted several investigations in collaboration with the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna of Pisa for the census and morphological characterization of ancient local cultivars, both fruit and vegetable (Giampiero Sammuri - President of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park).
