A more stable presence
In recent months there has been an increase in reports and indicators of the presence of wolves (Canis lupus) within the territory of the Regional Park of the Euganean Hills, suggesting a more frequent and potentially stable presence than in the past. It should be noted that the wolf is a protected species under national and international law and that its presence is part of the normal processes of natural expansion of the species observed in many areas of Italy.
Monitoring to continue
In this regard, the president of the Euganean Hills Regional Park, Alessandro Frizzarin, states: "The presence of wolves in our Euganean Hills should be interpreted as an enrichment of biodiversity, in line with the natural expansion of the species in many Italian areas. It is necessary to continue monitoring to determine whether the wolves will remain in the area or are merely passing through. It is important to emphasize that this is a protected species under national and international law. Precautions are recommended to protect domestic or farm animals, avoiding leaving them unattended during the evening and night hours." The Park Authority is continuing observation and monitoring activities in collaboration with the relevant bodies, in order to understand the evolution of the species' presence in the Euganean Hills.
The recommendations
At the same time, the Park urges citizens and farmers to exercise caution. Specifically, it recommends:
− do not leave pets free to roam outside the property, especially in the evening and at night;
− to adequately keep farm animals at night in closed or protected shelters;
− to equip the structures, where necessary, with suitable fences or adequate protection systems.
Responsible coexistence
As already indicated by the Authority, the adoption of simple but effective prevention measures significantly reduces the risk of predation and promotes responsible coexistence with a species of great naturalistic value. The Euganean Hills Regional Park will continue to inform the public about monitoring developments and work to ensure a balance between biodiversity protection, the safety of human activities, and the protection of agricultural activities.
