There were over a thousand reports in 2015, most of which occurred in the western part (between Trento, Val di Non and Val Rendena). A bear was also sighted in Eastern Trentino, but the episode remained isolated, according to reports from the Forestry and Fauna Service of the Province of Trento. In reality, there were three reports from the eastern part in total, but the other two have not received any feedback. Male bears are characterized by a territorial distribution of almost 21 thousand square kilometers (20794 to be precise).
The area relating to females was far less, specifically just 1303 square kilometers, albeit this figure is growing compared to what was recorded in the past. But how many bears were there in the twelve months examined in Trentino? The minimum and certain population amounts to 48 specimens, the estimated one is slightly higher and reaches 54 units. The 2015 Bear Report then highlighted the damage caused by the animal. There have been 163 complaints that can be attributed to bears: most of them (128) have to do with damage actually caused by the mammal, the rest did not have a full and 100% sure attribution.
Another interesting element is that of compensation for these damages. There were 112 requests: eight were not accepted, while all the others received a positive response. The damage caused by the brown bear made it necessary to pay about 65600 euros, a reimbursement three times higher than that for the assets of bees (just over 23 thousand euros), a value not very different from that for the assets of the agricultural sector (14 thousand euros). In the end, compensation for other damages reached a total of 1117 euros. The next appointment is obviously set in exactly one year.
