News from Brussels
If there is news that we did not expect, it is this… It must be said that the FNC has recently accustomed us to keeping secret a lot of information, especially that which is discussed in Brussels. In a press release published today, the National Hunters Federation has informed that the turtle dove hunting “could reopen” as early as next season with a quota.
The various contingents
It is on the proposal of the Task Force for the Recovery of Birds (TFRB) that turtle dove hunting could resume in the Member States, each with a quota. For France, it should be set at 10.560 birds caught. “The distribution between the different EU Member States concerned by this quota would be distributed mainly on the basis of their historical removals. A small part would also be adaptable according to the efforts of the country concerned to maintain the species, such as habitat restoration,” explains the press release.

The quota hunting proposal will be considered by Member States on 1 April at a meeting of the NADEG (Expert Group on the Birds and Habitats Directives). What the FNC statement does not say, however, is that, at the same time, the Task Force is pushing for adaptive management of several duck species, including Northern Shoveler, Pintail and Teal (source: Libera Caccia).
