Three years of adaptive withdrawal
We publish the technical document prepared by FACE - translated into Italian by the Federcaccia Studies and Research Office - which analyzes the results and points to be explored in more detail of the adaptive withdrawal process of the turtledove in place for three years in the European Union, managed by the European Commission through the Scientific Consortium.
The data in detail
The results are good for the western area, where the population is increasing, and less favorable for the central-eastern area where, after a ten-year period of stability from 2012 to 2021, a decline is observed with the 2022 and 2023 data. It should be underlined that the decline in the latter area, however, has never been as pronounced as in the western area, and that the analysis of the trend is missing data from Greece and some other EU states for 2023. FACE has also analyzed the efficiency of the mathematical model used and demonstrated that it is not precise in assessing the impact of hunting on the population, hypothesizing that there may be an overestimation of the influence of this factor or an underestimation of the size of the population.
Population dynamics
Furthermore, faced with a strong reduction in collection in the central-eastern area, the population does not appear to have responded positively. This result, which is not satisfactory, should be analyzed in the context of several factors that are evidently influencing population dynamics (source: FIDC).
