Fauna: Veneto, councilor Stival on the problem of the Lessinia wolves, alternative measures are necessary to contain the species and protect breeders and mountaineers.
On the presence of the wolf pack in Lessinia and on the problems they triggered in the territory for the breeders of domestic livestock, the hunting Daniele Stival wrote again to the Ministry for the Environment asking for an opinion and technical-scientific support. "Satisfactory alternative solutions must be found - writes Stival - to allow on the one hand, in view of the next mountain pasture season, the containment of domestic livestock predations, and on the other hand to mitigate the social alarm and the totally negative perception of the population of the Lessinia towards the presence of wolves. I expect the Ministry's willingness to take into consideration the management solutions, also in derogation regime, provided for by the EU and national legislation as well as the alternative solutions proposed by the local administrators of Lessinia within the framework of the 'crisis' technical table set up at the Prefecture of Verona, which indicated in the sterilization of the female of the herd or in the confinement of the herd in a fenced area large enough to guarantee the welfare of the herd itself ”.
The Regional Councilor summarizes the situation in Lessinia as it manifested itself in 2014: eleven wolves in activity; 53 heads of predated cattle, which rise to 60 with the predated cattle in the Trentino area and to which must be added the killing of a Labrador dog. "The prevention systems usually used for wolves - Stival also notes - according to the opinion of many experts, are difficult or ineffective to apply in Lessinia where there are hundreds of huts where extensive cattle grazing is traditionally practiced, in absence for the more than structures for the shelter of animals ".
On the social alarm, Stival adds in his letter that it is "always higher in the population of Lessinia as shown by the agendas that the Municipal Administrations vote one after the other, see the motions of Boscochiesanuova, Erbezzo, Vestenanova and Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo to ask the Region to take action for the purposes of the translocation of wolves or to identify another solution that makes the maintenance of the traditional activities of the area (breeding and tourism) compatible, which appear irremediably compromised by the presence of the Wolf ".
