On the Berici Hills in the last 10 years the roe deer have more than doubled and have colonized the woods: of the 4200 in the province, 1000 live in our hills of volcanic origin. The others live in the pre-alpine hilly areas. They have long since abandoned the mountains: the peaks are the kingdom of chamois (there are several of them both in the Small Dolomites and on the Pasubio massif) which according to estimates are 3288. With them also the mouflons (about 1314 heads). On the Asiago plateau, the deer is the king of the woods and pastures: the estimated heads in the province are 1468. In short, the few “wild” areas of the Vicenza area they are populated by an army of ungulates that reaches 10300 units.
And the farmers who in certain areas bordering the woods realize it are forced to protect the small plots where they grow lettuce with nets. Even the orchards pay the price and sometimes the vineyards too. The provincial police last year authorized the culling of over 800 wild boars. However, the most evident damage to agriculture is caused by the wild boar: only the Provincial Police, commanded by Claudio Meggiolaro, in 2020 it compiled reports for compensation that totaled 450 thousand euros. Against the 91 domestic animals (sheep, goats, donkeys and calves) killed by wolves: in this case the compensation of the Region is worth 10 times less, approximately 45-50 thousand euros.
And that's why the provincial police and volunteer hunters who work alongside the agents since 2017 have doubled the killing of wild boars, a species considered allochthonous: 435 killing of wild boars 4 years ago; 400 in 2018; 796 in 2019 and 810 in 2020. A number that is worth just under half of plan for the slaughter of ungulates provided for by provincial and regional regulations to maintain the balance of the ecosystem: in fact, the total number of animals killed last year were 1861 (LaPiazza Web).
