Endless damage
“They damage fields, destroy protection, infrastructure and crops. They threaten population centers and jeopardize road safety. The wild boar emergency in Puglia and Tarantino is now out of control. It's nothing new but now the limit is really full." The area Due Mari by Cia-Italian Farmers of Puglia goes back to shouting about “wildlife”. In light of the latest episodes recorded in the Tarantino area, with herds of hungry wild boars right in the center of Castellaneta Marina and in destructive action in the surrounding countryside, the organization bangs its fists on the table, bitterly contesting a series of reprieves of responsibility which up to now, unfortunately, have not it did nothing but mortify the territory.
Fear in residential areas
Agricultural sector on its knees, perception of safety underfoot on provincial and municipal-rural roads, particularly at nightfall. Fear in inhabited centers and first warning signs for the tourism sector in view of the imminent start of the summer season in Castellaneta Marina and Marina di Ginosa. “The wild boars are raging undisturbed, they are continuously increasing and now reach portions of the territory, including inhabited centers, which until recently had never been affected by the emergency. This all happens on a daily basis while the usual bureaucratic delays slow down the action of the many actors involved in the matter: the Government, the Region, the ATC, the hunting associations. However, the "sofa spectators" who are members of the many environmental and animal rights associations deserve a separate chapter: their grim defense of wild boars inexorably clashes not only with the protection of the agricultural sector, but also with road safety, health and safety. man's physical safety. They pontificate, pronounce and act with blinders on, instead underestimating the environmental damage that an omnivorous animal not native to our territory (it is right to remember this) can cause to our real wild fauna and microfauna (foxes, badgers, porcupines, martens, hares, hedgehogs , etc..)".
A real pandemic
These last aspects and much more were discussed exactly one year ago during a conference on wildlife organized by Cia in the presence of illustrious guests: politicians, regional managers and university professors asserted that the wild boar emergency in Puglia had now took on the characteristics of a real pandemic. A year later, the situation has drastically worsened and the numbers are continually rising. We have also recorded fatal accidents caused by killer wild boar crossings and we still cannot understand the reason for repeated buck-passing among those who have the real expertise in managing this emergency.
Fixed stakeout
In Puglia, selective culling activities have not yet started so it is clear that something has not worked. Breaking news is that they will probably start on March 19th and end on July 15th. For now, hunting will only be possible using the fixed stakeout technique and therefore we wonder if these provisions will be enough to contain the entire emergency. And while the ping-pong between the Region and ATC continues regarding the rural areas in which hunting can be done, the wild boars have now dangerously reached the inhabited centers. There is no more time to waste: politics has the duty to respond immediately with responsibility and concrete actions. We need to give strength to the abatement plan launched by the Region and everyone must do their part also to streamline a process that is perhaps too cumbersome and simplify procedures that are difficult to apply. In light of what has been described, a question arises spontaneously: aren't bureaucratic procedures becoming increasingly cumbersome to avoid the actual application of the containment plan in the field, so as not to displease environmentalists and animal rights activists?
