The words of councilor Morroni
The amendments to regulation no. 34/99 on the hunting of the wild boar species, prepared by the Regional Council, were unanimously approved by the Third Commission of the Legislative Assembly ofUmbria. Before the vote, the Commission listened to the regional councilor for the environment and representatives of territorial hunting areas (ATC), hunting and agricultural associations. Councilor Roberto Morroni explained that "the proposed regulation provides for a series of changes requested by the hunting world to facilitate teams in killing, also with a view to combating the spread of the wild boar species and swine fever. We have made the boar hunters' requests our own and in some cases we have implemented them: the minimum number therefore drops from 20 to 15 participants. And up to 50% of the members can be guests, i.e. hunters not registered with the team.
National plan against ASF
It will also be possible to join multiple teams to reach the minimum number of participants. These interventions will be added to those envisaged by the 'National Plan against African swine fever', which will soon be incorporated into a regional plan. To comply with the provisions of the Extraordinary Commissioner for African swine fever, 44 thousand culls per year will have to be reached, of which 10 thousand in selection and 10 thousand with containment. The fight against swine fever has a more sanitary than hunting approach, being aimed at blocking the spread of this disease. The abatement objectives are set by the National Plan and are not negotiable. The greatest effort will be not through hunting but through selection and containment. These measures must be implemented and cannot be discussed.
The total number of kills
The criteria of the National Plan do not allow free intervention: the world is changing and all the reforms and changes to the hunting sector can be hypothesized in 5 years. The implementation of supply chains is one of the fundamental aspects of the Plan, given that it is a food resource that cannot be dispersed or destroyed." With respect to the innovations introduced by the offices of Palazzo Donini, the representatives of ATC, hunting and agricultural associations have expressed doubts about the actual possibility of reaching such a high number of killings, given the decline in the same recorded this year. Among the measures to increase slaughter, a rotation in the allocation of sectors has been hypothesized, while the need to structure supply chains that enhance and make the consumption of meat from slaughtered wild boars safer has been underlined on several occasions. Finally, regional councilor Manuela Puletti (Lega) highlighted that "the changes to the regulation are acceptable and also facilitate the bureaucratic aspect, facilitating small teams. A review of the sectors will also have to be carried out, with a division of the regional territory into three areas. The involvement of hunting associations was lacking, which instead would have created greater sharing. However, the path is the right one" (source: Regional Council of Umbria).
