Responsibility to take
“What we unfortunately feared and have always denounced happened last night. Now everyone must take their own responsibilities: let's fight this emergency with adequate tools because Human lives are at stake“. This is what Cia-Agricoltori Italiani Puglia states, commenting on the fatal accident on Saturday 3 February, which occurred on the state road 580 between Ginosa and Marina di Ginosa: a 48-year-old woman lost her life following a collision with a van stopped in the center road because a few moments earlier he had hit a large wild boar. Furthermore, on the same evening, a few kilometers away, on provincial road 13 between Castellaneta and Castellaneta Marina, another "killer crossing" sent a vehicle off the road, fortunately without serious consequences for the driver and passengers.
Wild boar emergency
“In recent months we have commented on other similar accidents and only luck would have it that they did not take on the contours of a tragedy” declared Vito Rubino, the director of the Due Mari Taranto-Brindisi area, a vast territory which has been tormented for years by the wild boar emergency . “Yesterday - added Rubino - unfortunately the worst happened in the Ginosa area and the responsibilities of an unjustifiable inertia, despite the extraordinary nature of the emergency, will undoubtedly have to be clarified in the competent bodies. What happened is not tolerable, we have been denouncing it for years with videos, interviews, conferences on the topic and press notes. In Puglia, due to the usual bureaucratic delays, selective culling activities have not yet started so it is clear that something has not worked". “The ordinary hunting activity ended on January 15th - explained Rubino - and the wild boars, until that day holed up in protected parks, are now reaching the inhabited centers again”.
The need for concrete actions
In our opinion, the world of politics, both at a regional and national level, has the immediate duty to respond with responsibility and concrete actions. We need to give strength to the abatement plan launched by the Puglia Region and everyone must do their part: Government, Region, ATC, hunting associations, environmentalist associations and agricultural associations. “May our most sincere condolences reach the victim's family - concluded Rubino - to whom we assure that we will continue to make our voice heard so that similar tragedies do not occur again”.
Environmental balance
The president of Cia-Agricoltori Italiani Puglia and national vice-president of Cia Gennaro Sicolo also spoke on the topic, undoubtedly of regional scope: “It is necessary to restore a situation of environmental balance that has no longer existed for many years. Solving the problem is not simple, but we need to start tackling it seriously, with determination, because in addition to the damage to crops, we are continuing to pay a very high price in terms of human lives." “In the last year - explained the president - the number of wild boars in Puglia has tripled. It is urgent to obtain from the Government appropriate legislative changes and a national regulatory framework that takes into account the current dimensions of the wild boar phenomenon, with a number of specimens capable of multiplying exponentially every year. Enough is enough - concluded Sicolo - this is an emergency that should be managed like a pandemic" (source: CIA).
