A near tragedy
Yet another road tragedy narrowly missed and avoided only thanks to the motorist's sense of responsibility: the sudden invasion of a herd of wild boars in the Tarantino area, on the evening of Sunday 24 September, it caused a dangerous accident on state road 7 between the territories of Castellaneta and Laterza. As mentioned, fortunately no one was injured: the car was destroyed, a lot of fear and 10 dead wild boars, both adults and puppies. That stretch of highway, always very busy, was temporarily closed to traffic to allow assistance to the unfortunate motorist, a 50-year-old lady resident in Castellaneta, and to facilitate the delicate work of the veterinarians of the Taranto Local Health Authority, who were on site throughout at night for the long operations required by the health protocol.
Damage to crops and more
The spotlight is once again turned on, therefore, on the wild boar emergency throughout the regional territory: a topic which for Cia Agricoltori Italiani di Puglia has always been highly topical due to the serious damage to crops and agricultural companies in Puglia and which is now, unfortunately, taking on much more serious connotations, repeatedly putting man's life at risk. “Now the problem is not just for farmers, but for the entire Apulian community - reported the president of Cia Puglia and national vice-president of Cia-Italian Farmers Gennaro Sicolo -. However, what is painful to note - the president clarified - is the almost total absence of those with expertise in environmental matters at institutional tables.
There's no more time to waste
Evidently we still don't realize how important it is to safeguard the public safety of citizens. The damage to crops is now unquantifiable and now there is even the risk of witnessing and commenting on fatal accidents. “We believe there is no more time to waste - concluded Sicolo -, but everyone must do their part. We have always done ours, while the regional institutions for what concerns the Environment sector are stalling and choosing not to be incisive. But time is running out and wild boars, increasingly numerous, are now threatening the inhabited centers from the countryside. We are in an emergency and we need to intervene immediately with extraordinary tools." (Source CIA)
