“A situation of saturation with the number of specimens in continuous growth that is becoming unsustainable for our companies and for the safety of citizens and which is compromising the environmental balance of vast Piedmontese territorial areas, even in areas of high naturalistic value. Reducing the wild boar population is a priority over the spread of the virus as well A dog which represents a high risk for our pig herd and for the entire connected supply chain ". This is what Roberto Moncalvo, president of Coldiretti Piedmont and Bruno Rivarossa confederal delegate with respect to the priorities of the 2021 Surveillance and Prevention Plan published by Ministry of Health for ASF, which is based on the passive control of wild boars, on the surveillance of pig farms, on the verification of the levels of application of biosecurity measures and on the training and information campaign of stakeholders.
"The lighthouse is therefore rekindled on a problem that has never been resolved: that of controlling the presence of wild boars on our territory, even in terms of balance and functionality of natural ecosystems, as well as causing considerable damage to agriculture that are not even covered by the compensation because the loss of income caused to entrepreneurs goes far beyond the value of the compensation obtainable - continue Moncalvo and Rivarossa -.
An integrated approach is therefore urgently needed, a package of actions which, on the one hand, must act on both numerical and spatial reduction, on the other must take the form of measures that can also allow mayors to adopt emergency ordinances to authorize extraordinary containment measures. Finally, it is appropriate to regulate the methods of use of the regional fund for prevention and to compensation for damage caused to agricultural production, in order to streamline the process, so as to quickly ensure the assessment of the damage and the disbursement of the sums available ".
