Military note
In recent months, the Carabinieri Forestry of the "Arcipelago Toscano" National Park Department have been involved, together with other institutional bodies, in putting a stop to the proliferation of wild boars on the Island of Elba. While studies and evaluations are being carried out for the better management of the phenomenon, reports have arrived of people who would give food to wild boars perhaps with the idea of performing a useful action. The military, however, are keen to point out that the foraging (feeding them) of wild boars, as well as being absolutely inadvisable for ethological reasons, i.e. related to the biology of the species, is expressly prohibited by Law 221 of 2015, which prohibits it, "with the exception of that aimed at control activities". Violation of this prohibition, which constitutes a crime, entails imprisonment from 2 months to 6 months or a fine from €516 to €2.065.
What the law says
The reasons why the legislator established this case are essentially three: first of all, the food that is given to the wild boars is not appropriate and can harm the health of the animals; secondly, the animals, because of this artificial nourishment, are led to abandon their habitat and their habits and get dangerously close to inhabited centers and arterial roads; finally, the practice of feeding wild animals favors their uncontrolled reproduction with easily understandable negative consequences.
Dangerous behavior
Therefore, in addition to going against the law, citizens who carry out such gestures, which are only apparently harmless, must be aware that their behavior increases the conflict between human activities and wild boars and increases the danger of road accidents.
