ROME - The reform of the Law 157 / 1992 is not the result of political improvisation, nor of pressure from outside Parliament. The Government representative made this clear in the Chamber, responding to the question of the Hon. Zanella, reiterating that the text of the new bill was drawn up at the direct request of five regional councilsand Conference of the Regions, numerous municipalities and, above all, following a Parliamentary address act approved unanimously in the last legislature.
The parliamentary document – act no. 337, discussed in the Senate Agriculture Commission – contained 21 key pointsto structurally address the problem of the excessive presence of wild fauna. Ungulates, wild boars in particular, are in fact causing serious difficulties agricultural activity, the balance of ecosystems, public safety (with even fatal road accidents) and the animal health, with the risk of spreading diseases such as African swine fever.
On this basis, the Government deemed it necessary to proceed, in full legality and in compliance with European constraints. No arbitrary concessions to the hunting lobby, therefore, but a transparent and participatory path.
"It is not true - the Minister pointed out - that the species that can be used as live decoys will be expanded, nor that there will be changes in the use of bird snares. Even the alleged opening to hunting in state-owned maritime areas is completely unfounded. This is fake news artfully fueled to create controversy.”
On the contrary, we are aiming for more effective tools flexible in drafting hunting calendars, updated on the basis of scientific data, also taking into account the climate changes.
The Government, in reaffirming its intention to maintain an open dialogue with all associations – environmental, animal rights, hunting and scientific –, intends to continue along a path of modernization of the legislation which takes into account the changed needs of the territory, of farmers' rights, but also of the conservation of wildlife heritage, in a balance that is not always easy, but essential.
