The meeting that doesn't convince
A project for the Wolf monitoring in Tuscany, entrusted by the Region and the ATCs only to Federcaccia and Coldiretti. Financed with public money from all Tuscan hunters, for a total of 150 thousand euros. Arcicaccia regionale and Cia Agricoltori Italiani Toscana are not in agreement, having written a letter addressed to the vice-president and councilor for agriculture of the Tuscany Region Stefania Saccardi and to the hunting sector manager Marco Ferretti, and signed by their respective presidents Sirio Bussolotti and Valentino Berni. “We have learned of a meeting – Bussolotti (Arcicaccia) and Berni (Cia Toscana) underline – on the project for monitoring the wolf in our region in the presence of the Hunting Department, the Tuscan ATCs and two associations, Federcaccia and Coldiretti. In this meeting we understand that a project for a census of the canid population was presented, which should be carried out by Fidc and Coldiretti and financed by the 15 Tuscan ATCs for an amount, apparently, of 150 thousand euros”.
Personalistic use
The ATC initiative surprises us and not a little, because they repeat that there are not enough resources for the prevention and compensation of damages to agricultural companies, but in this case the resources have been found. This initiative made only towards two associations, suggests a personalistic use of such tools, and also in this case we expect clarifications from the Tuscany Region. Thus Arcicaccia and Cia highlight the "total opposition to the initiative, not because the studies are not important and useful, but because it is not possible to draw on funds deriving from the taxes paid by hunters for a project of this kind. These funds must be used to make the ATC work, to restore habitats and animal populations, to prevent and compensate for damages to agricultural crops and all this must be done avoiding increases in quotas that discourage hunters from registering. We also want to underline the irregularity of a meeting on such an important topic to which only two associations are invited, one hunting and one agricultural, excluding the others".
Hunting problem
"We remind you that the ATC funds - say Bussolotti and Berni -, derived from the taxes of all hunters, cannot be used to benefit a single associative reality. Last, but not least, we believe that the wolf is not and should not become a 'hunting problem', this cumbersome presence impacts the entire population of the region and it is right that the latter finds the necessary funds for its resolution". Thus Arcicaccia regionale and Cia Toscana ask for a meeting with vice president Saccardi to have a clarification on the situation (source: Arci Caccia).
