An exponential growth
«We understand the concern of the territories, in particular the mountain ones for the exponential growth of the wolf specimens. Sensitivity to the topic is shared. The Region has already made its requests for a national table. We call for rapid state intervention to ensure containment."
The growing concern
Concern about the presence of wolves, especially in mountain areas, arrives in the regional assembly with an amendment by the councilors of the PD group to an agenda presented by the League. «We all urge the Government together to take all the necessary actions aimed at controlling and containing the wolf, including monitoring, in order to guarantee compatibility between the presence of this large carnivore and human, agricultural and zootechnical activities – explain the advisers who presented the deed – In recent years there has been an exponential growth of specimens, sightings are numerous and increasingly close to inhabited centres. The Region is carrying out all the necessary activities within the limits of its competences. Now it is the State that has to take charge of the situation also by tackling the issue at a European level".
Too much damage
Colonies of wolves have returned to many mountainous and rural areas in the Emilia Romagna region and are increasingly in conflict with human activities, with damage to breeders and farmers and attacks on domestic animals. “We need a quick solution – continue the signatories of the document – because the problem is spreading and is also generating alarm among the population. As already claimed by Councilor Mammi who asked that the problem be brought to the national agricultural policy commission, we think it is necessary that all the financing options suitable for the prevention and compensation of damages be recognized. We ask the Government to put pressure on the European strategy for wolf management to be re-evaluated in an evolving framework, in which the return of the large predator is growing rapidly» (source: FIDC).
