Emilia Romagna and Piedmont
Emilia-Romagna and Piedmont are two regions in northern Italy that are just 0 km apart because they border. This banal geographical reality, familiar to every elementary school child, is however called into question by two decisions by their respective Regional Administrative Courts (TAR) regarding the "unsightly mess" of wood pigeons , which has been a hot topic for the past year. Indeed, in 2025, around this time, the Emilia-Romagna government decided to declare war on the wonderful "Blue Birds," blamed (unfairly) for being the only true punishment from God for the region's farmers, completely ignoring the impact of ravenous hordes of rock pigeons.
Number of killings
The decision was drastic, but also cruel and inexplicable. According to regional experts and administrators, it was essential to cull as many of this species as possible, which, let's remember, is migratory and therefore not the property of the region but of the entire Northern Palearctic. It was therefore decided to proceed with the culls from April 1st to September 15th, thus during the breeding and parental care period, condemning the newborn chicks to certain death by starvation. In the deafening (and complicit) silence of the fifty or so animal rights and environmental associations, of all those opposition politicians who are now raising barricades in defense of the rock pigeon (and unfortunately of all the other hunting associations as well), only Libera Caccia filed an appeal with the regional administrative court, which rejected it.
Periculum and must
Today, just a few kilometers away, another Regional Administrative Court (TAR), upholding the appeal of several animal rights groups, suspended the early opening of the 2026/2027 Regional Hunting Calendar for September 1st! What is perplexing and incredulous is that the single judge, for just one day of early opening, recognized the existence of a "periculum in mora," that is, the extremely serious risk of serious and irreparable harm to wildlife! It may seem like a joke, but I assure you it's true, and this is how the wildlife and environmental problems of our wonderful and incredible country are addressed. In Emilia-Romagna, wood pigeons can be slaughtered for five and a half months, during the peak breeding season, starving the chicks in their nests, while in Piedmont, across the regional border, wood pigeon hunting is prohibited on September 1st! I wish the many newspapers that spend countless columns reviving the lies and exaggerations of the animalist swamp would dedicate a few lines to this absurd situation. But I already know, unfortunately, that this is a vain hope. It would require too much courage and an ideological and political independence that those "information" outlets simply cannot possess.
