Health status of the species
A conference on the topic was held in Riccagioia, the ERSAF Riccagioia headquarters in Torrazza Coste (PV). woodcock which saw an excellent participation of enthusiasts present in the room. The meeting offered interesting ideas and confirmations of the excellent state of health of the species. The speakers' interventions clarified the good state of conservation of the woodcock, which is not in danger. Current estimates indicate a population in the Western Palearctic of about 17 million adult individuals, which reaches 25 million including the young born each year.
Monitoring work
A central role in the conference was dedicated to monitoring work. Dr. Michele Sorrenti, technical-scientific coordinator of the Office of Studies and Research of Federcaccia Nazionale, illustrated in detail the activities carried out by Federcaccia, which include satellite telemetry, wing collection and various monitoring programs. The FIBEC – Federazione Italiana Beccacciai team also presented their results on the monitoring carried out. In particular, the data from monitoring in Lombardy were examined in depth, highlighting how the peak of woodcock migration occurs in mid-March. This work, fundamental and often conducted by hunters, is crucial for understanding the periods of presence of the species and for defining hunting calendars.
Public wildlife heritage
The day ended with a round table, during which the participants drew their own conclusions. The willingness to collaborate with serious organizations that appreciate the commitment of the hunting world was reiterated, starting from the words of Marco Bruni, President of Federcaccia Lombardia. The work carried out, in fact, is not limited only to hunting purposes, but contributes significantly to understanding the consistency of a public wildlife heritage, providing essential data for its management and conservation.
