The theme of the 2024
Nine million hectares of forests and almost two million other wooded lands, which cover 35% of the national territory: the Italian forestry heritage is among the richest and most varied in Europe. In the international day of forests, dedicated in 2024 to the theme of innovation, the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security highlights the importance of new technologies to defend the Italian forest ecosystem and improve knowledge of it.
The value of biodiversity
For minister Gilberto Pichetto, "forests play a crucial role in achieving climate and sustainable development objectives". “The biodiversity value of forests – adds Pichetto – is intertwined with Italian history and culture, making our forestry heritage a true national asset: for this – he concludes – we are working, within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, for forestation in fourteen metropolitan cities, also investing in the digitalisation of Protected Areas, which helps fruition, conservation and administrative simplification".
Value of forestry assets
The day, established for the first time in 2012 by the United Nations General Assembly, was created to raise awareness among public opinion and future generations of the importance of forests as central tools in the process of adaptation to climate change and to give due emphasis to the value of the national forestry heritage, to the need to protect old-growth forests and monumental trees.
Growing attention
In compliance with the ambitious European framework on biodiversity for 2030, MASE is strongly committed to accompanying the management bodies of parks and marine protected areas in actions aimed at protecting biodiversity and ensuring the maintenance of ecosystem services. Growing attention is paid to the commitments due to the signing of the UNESCO Conventions, in particular those relating to the World Heritage Convention, the Man and the Biosphere Program and the Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage (Source MASE).
