A vital topic for everyone
Taking care of the soil: measuring, monitoring, managing is the theme chosen for the 2024 edition of the World Soil Day, scheduled for next December 5th. Hunters are people with their feet firmly planted on the ground! And this also applies to this theme, so important and vital for all of us, on which the Italian Hunting Federation has also intervened on several occasions, denouncing degradation and loss of soil and promoting initiatives for protection and restoration.
Decision making process
Today's Day, the tenth worldwide, aims to underline the importance of accurate data and information on soil to understand its characteristics and support an informed decision-making process on sustainable soil management for food security. But the decrease in fertile land does not only have consequences in the food sector or by taking away precious spaces and habitats when not absolutely necessary for biodiversity. Overbuilding and excessive urban development then lead to a failure to absorb rainwater, which combined with other causes exponentially increase the hydraulic risk of many territories, with damage and victims.
Sustainability goal
Year after year, this event highlights some aspects that we take for granted, or to which we do not pay much attention: this year, in particular, the relationship between soil and water in the creation of sustainable and resilient agri-food systems has been highlighted. This is why it becomes important for everyone to put into practice virtuous behaviors, which safeguard the quality and presence of "useful" soil. But also to "monitor" and, if necessary, highlight potentially critical situations. And no one can do it better than those who, like us, are on the territory every day, all year round (source: FIDC).
