An exemplary puppy of reindeer male just one year old - renamed 'Rudolph' like the reindeer pulling Santa's sleigh - he was to become the 'star' of the "Animal Oasis" in the Piane di Mocogno, on theModenese Apennines. Instead, not even after 48 hours since his arrival he has been killed by wolves or wild dogs.
The young reindeer - so the Gazzetta di Modena tells the story - went into the woods on Friday evening, taking advantage of a lowering of the fence net of the structure caused by the fall of a tree. In the area between Lama Mocogno and Palagano, wolves and wild dogs have been reported for some time and right in Palagano, in a field about one kilometer from the center, the remains of 'Rudolph' have been found by some hunters.
The animal, according to the Modenese newspaper, was recognized by a veterinarian intervened on the spot by the legs: the rest of the body had been devoured by predators from which the reindeer was unable to defend itself also because, being a puppy, his horns were still very short (La Repubblica).
