The deadline for questions
“The Piedmont Region has reopened the call for tenders for compensation for damages caused by predation by large carnivores to the Piedmontese livestock heritage in the period from 1 July to 31 December 2024. The deadline for submitting applications expires on 28 February 2025, but we invite interested breeders to act promptly, because in the event that the resources are not sufficient, the chronological order of submission of requests will be taken into account”.
The advantages of the measure
This is the recommendation of the deputy director and head of the livestock sector of Cia Cuneo, Silvio Chionetti, who underlines how the measure is in favor of breeders of sheep, goats, cattle, horses and other species of livestock interest, with the overall regional contribution of 420 thousand euros. The same announcement also provides aid to Piedmont beekeepers registered in the National Database who have not availed themselves of insurance coverage and who have suffered damage from bears.
When compensation is recognized
"The call - Chionetti observes - provides for direct reimbursement to breeders equal to 100 percent of the commercial value of the preyed animal. Indirect damages from predation are also recognized, such as veterinary and pharmaceutical expenses for injured animals and compensation for production losses. The compensation is recognized exclusively in the case in which the data of the predation report have been registered on the regional Arvet platform".
Economic value of the garments
The attribution of the economic value of an animal is carried out on the basis of the data communicated by the breeder (or his representative) to the person in charge of the assessment during the inspection, and on the documentation also presented subsequently, in support of the request for compensation. “The breeder - Chionetti points out - must provide the person in charge of the assessment and, subsequently, attach to the request for compensation, the documentation relating to registration in the Genealogical Book. In the absence of this information in the assessment report and of the relative documentation attached to the request, the animal is attributed the minimum recognisable tabular value for the category to which it belongs” (source: CIA).
