A shared strategy to eliminate wild boars from the Archipelago
Double strategy developed by the Park Authority to try to solve the problem of the presence of hybrid wild boars within the Archipelago and cope with the emergency caused by the dizzying increase in animals on the island of Caprera, a phenomenon that is extending to the island mother of La Maddalena. The discussion, addressed during a Services Conference wanted in synergy by the Park Authority and the Municipality of La Maddalena, saw, in addition to the two aforementioned Administrations, the presence of all the institutional subjects involved: Regional and State Forestry Corps, Ente Foreste, Asl, Province of Olbia-Tempio and Carabinieri, in order to develop shared solutions in view of the start of the eradication campaign of the non-native species of wild boar.
There are two solutions proposed by the Via Giulio Cesare Authority on the basis of a complex regulatory framework, which requires particular attention in the procedures to be adopted. The first provides for the immediate start of the procedures for the capture of animals with the use of cages and subsequent slaughter (in this regard, an expression of interest has already been made public for the identification of a subject capable of handling the transport of animals. to slaughter). A second is articulated with the launch of a longer administrative process that involves the slaughter of pigs by means of controlled strokes by adequately trained personnel.
The need to modify the Management Plan, which dates back to six years ago and which will have to be updated by monitoring the current situation and identifying the objective reasons justifying the killing of the animals, emerged during the Service Conference. The alarms that have developed over the last few months in particular on the island of Caprera for the safety of people amply motivate both modes of intervention. The discussion of the participants in the Services Conference on the draft regulations presented by the Park Authority served to clarify regulatory and procedural doubts and perplexities.
Following the example of Porto Conte, the capture campaign using cages will be launched shortly. The procedure for selective killing is slower, for the operation of which the training of operators able to offer precise guarantees on compliance with the protocols and who must be subjected to strict controls by the personnel of the administrations in charge is envisaged. The strict rules envisaged by national and regional regulations will exclude any possibility of equivocating targeted selections with other forms of wildlife killing.
