An urgent request for intervention is the one signed by the League's MEPs Dreosto, Casanova, Zambelli and Tardino, through the question sent to the European Commission on Thursday 28 January. “In recent years, many Member States have seen a significant increase in opportunistic predatory species which, as amply demonstrated by specific studies on the subject, is a serious danger for the conservation of vulnerable species and in particular for birds that nest on the ground "declared the Vice President of the Hunting and Biodiversity Intergroup, Marco Dreosto.
This problem was also raised by the Coordinator and scientific manager of the Studies and Research Office of Federcaccia Nazionale, dr. Michael Sorrenti, who specified "It is no coincidence that some international action plans, approved by the EC itself, envisage the control of predators as a priority action to restore the various species to a favorable conservation status." In many areas the presence of foxes, corvids, herring gulls and ardeidae reduces reproductive success to a minimum compromising the recovery of populations and their conservation.
The parliamentarians therefore asked the Commission, like what has already been indicated for the fight against invasive alien species and with a general view of protecting biodiversity, to express guidelines and a possible list of species, intended for the control of the same, to be entrusted to the stakeholders directly involved, namely hunters, farmers, landowners and fishermen, so that they can be the protagonists of concrete, effective and targeted actions. It was also jointly asked whether the Commission intends to monitor and intervene against States that do not implement the control of opportunistic predators to restore declining species to a favorable conservation status.
