It was concluded at Roggiano Gravina (province of Cosenza) the course for hunters focused on the assessment of health risks following killing and presence of TB in wild boars. The lectures recorded the participation of over 300 hunters which are part of theCosenza Territorial Hunting Area 1, organizer of the event together with the ASP Veterinary Service Area B.
As the organizers themselves explained, wild boar is a problematic wild species and infections and overabundant spread should never be underestimated. The goal was to propose a serious initiative, based on dialogue, defense and enhancement of the territory and of the huntable fauna. In this way, hunters can be participants and protagonists of a sustainable and rewarding hunt, to be perceived as a resource and not a problem.
It is very difficult for wild boar to transmit tuberculosis to humans, unless there are "open" lesions and very close contact with the infected hoofed animal. Eating infected meat is obviously even more dangerous, although it can be limited by cooking or seasoning: consequently, training courses such as the Cosentino one and trained hunters are an increasingly urgent need.
