The Councilor for Hunting of the Abruzzo Region, Mauro Febbo, announced that wild boar hunting in the region has been extended until January 5, 2012.
Febbo announcing the extension he explained, “Allowing a breath of fresh air to farmers by significantly reducing damage to crops. With this reason, it was decided to extend the wild boar hunt until 5 January 2012 ”.
The councilor for hunting also specified that every year in the Abruzzo Region "damage to crops was recorded for over € 2,2 million between protected and non-protected areas. In particular, the wild boars alone caused damage outside the protected areas for an amount of approximately 1 million 400 thousand euros per year.
Continuing Febbo states, “Postponing the closing date for boar hunting we will also implement a substantial control on the number of specimens present throughout the territory regional and in particular in the areas surrounding the Parks ".
They let the Region know that the measure is obviously only a palliative to buffer the situation while waiting for the actions to be taken for a better management of the species be defined in the new regional Hunting Wildlife Plan. In fact, the new Faunal Plan will have among the main tasks that of managing the populations of ungulates present both in protected areas and in non-protected areas.
Finally Febbo concluded, "With this in mind, a technical table will be set up between all the subjects interested in management (Region, Provinces and Parks) together with the technicians in charge, among the best at national level, with the involvement of the various associations of categories, in particular those of farmers, so that we arrive at concrete solutions that are truly shared. The goal is to achieve a significant reduction in the damage caused to agricultural crops, naturally also compatible with the conservation of the species ".
