Two hunters from the province of Foggia quarrel over issues concerning the hunting area, one shoots at the other but the Carabinieri arrest him.
In the countryside of Foggia, in the locality of Monte Fedele di Bovino, a violent quarrel between hunters ends with one wounded and one of the two arrested. A hunter considers his hunting space to be violated and begins a heated discussion with his rival; in a fit of rage one of the two hunters takes up his rifle and shoots the other, causing him a wound that can be healed in about fifteen days.
Immediately after, the man returned to his home and called the Carabinieri who, however, already aware of the incident as they were informed by the wounded, were already looking for him. The hunter told the military that in the course of a hunt a hunting accident had occurred, admitting that he had injured a person and that in the meantime he had returned home; subsequently the man still reported that he had been attacked by the injured person and that he had engaged in a fight with them.
According to the man during the struggle he had accidentally dropped his rifle that he was carrying on his shoulder and from which a shot had gone which had wounded the contender; after the incident the man reported that he immediately returned home to notify the police.
The version provided by the character, however, was immediately in contrast with what was reported by the other participants in the hunt and by the injured hunter himself, already heard by the soldiers who intervened on the spot following the incident.
From the reconstruction of the investigators it would seem that the two had actually come to a fight for futile reasons after which one of the two had exploded a rifle behind the other wounding him. The victim of the attack was subsequently transported and hospitalized at the Ospedali Riuniti of Foggia, reporting a "gunshot wound in the posterior region of the left hemithorax" which could be healed in 15 days unless there were complications.
In the light of the facts ascertained, the Carabinieri of the Orsara di Puglia Station and of the Compagnia di Foggia arrested Francesco Spano, 58, resident in Bovino, to answer for the crime of attempted murder; the man was transferred to the Foggia Prison.
The rifle used by Spano was confiscated and following investigations at his home, the Carabinieri also seized a pistol owned by the man and two shotguns owned by the son kept in the same house and all regularly detained.
