Wild boar hunting. The new rules for the control of wild boars in Abruzzo are working. This is confirmed by the reduction of about 30% of claims for damages and an increase of 80% of wild boars killed in self-control.
The results are positive one year after the entry into force of the regulation and the hunting of selection for the problematic wild boars.
The Abruzzo Region, in 2014, in fact approved a 'Regulation for the Management of the Wild Boar', which provides for the direct involvement of hunters, and makes them responsible by making them not only 'users', but real 'managers' of portions of the territory to them. assigned.
The regulation was then further amended and improved in September 2015, overcoming some 'rigidities' that made it difficult to apply to the territories. "Despite the objective difficulties in the concrete implementation of this new path - said the commissioner Dino Pepe - after a year from the entry into force of the regulation, there are extremely positive signs, and a sort of" turnaround "in relation to the number of claims for damages from wild boar.
The result, although referring only to the number of claims for compensation received and not to the economic entity of the damage and, for l? year 2015, only for the period 1 January - 31 October (period after which all the crops damaged by the wild boar have been harvested), must be judged very positive.
First of all, it should be noted that this year, during the self-control activity (May-September) many more wild boars were killed than last year (+ 80% on a regional basis). This data has undoubtedly contributed, in a decisive way, to the reduction of damage in agriculture. This year, during the self-control activity (May-September) many more wild boars were killed than last year (+ 80% on a regional basis). This factor has undoubtedly contributed, in a decisive way, to the reduction of damages previously illustrated.
Pepe emphasizes some particularly positive management experiences made by two regional ATCs, in particular: ATC Pescara and ATC Chietino-Lancianese. "In these two ATCs - explained the commissioner - a real" wild boar emergency service "was activated, on an experimental basis and with the active collaboration of the Agricultural Associations, for which the individual farmer could" report "directly the ATC (through the appropriate form available on the internet) for the presence of damage and / or wild boars on their crops.
Subsequently, the ATC, in real time (within 24-48 hours) gave an answer to the individual farmer ”. This immediate operation allowed the two ATCs to carry out a large number of positive interventions: "I am convinced - added the commissioner - that further improvement interventions on the Regulations will allow in the future to manage the wild boar in an overall way, overcoming the criticalities that have occurred in this beginning. Among other things, as foreseen by the hunting calendar in force, it will be possible to carry out, subject to approval by the Provinces of the sampling plan, the selection hunt also in the month of January, effectively increasing the hunting activity from 3 to 4.
An absolute novelty is the inclusion of selection hunting in the hunting calendar which on the one hand constitutes a tool that helps to reduce the excessive presence of the species and on the other allows the hunter to prolong the hunting activity. In this regard, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all the actors of this new management model, from the Provinces to the ATC, up to the hunters who have shown wisdom and a collaborative spirit. Now a new phase begins with the aim of creating a truly virtuous supply chain capable of transforming the problem into a resource ".
