A thousand animals were killed. The ungulate season has also closed with around 4'500 animals captured
The hunting season for the two animals ended last Sunday. 560 wild boars were killed by hunters during the winter, in addition to 354 high hunts and 105 game keeper catches, for a total of 1019 head.
This year's catches were overall lower than those of the previous year (1151 head). In 2010, the field keepers recorded 70% fewer culls, a fact attributable to a significant reduction in reports of damage to agricultural crops.
The wild boar continues to be very present in the canton, the Department of the territory said, and it is therefore "necessary to maintain strong hunting pressure". At the regional level, the districts with the highest catches are confirmed as Lugano, Locarno and Mendrisio. Few catches in Val di Blenio, Leventina and Riviera, where wild boar is less present.
During the 2010/2011 season, the approximately 2 hunters who hunt ungulates annually captured a total of 000 chamois, 1 deer, 322 roe deer, 1 wild boars and 776 ibex, for a total of 324 head. (1 the previous year).
