The Councilor Casabianca presented the balance of the 2010/2011 hunting season in the Province
Spice. The hunting calendar of wild boar hunting ended on January 31, 2011 and the 1900 hunters operating in the area killed 3206 wild boars compared to 4500 that could be killed, a decrease of 7% compared to the previous year.
“This year, 244 fewer animals were killed than in the 2009/2010 hunting season - underlines the Provincial Councilor for Hunting Giorgio Casabianca. Bad weather and snow have in fact caused a decrease in the number of hunts carried out but the number of wild boars present in the area is still similar to that of other years.
I remember that the wild boar is not an indigenous animal as it has been imported here in the last fifty years mainly from Sardinia and Maremma and causes considerable damage to crops. The Province of La Spezia spends around € 150.000 annually on prevention and compensation for damages. With respect to prevention, we finance 90% for the purchase of the electric shepherd and 80% for the purchase of the metal fence. Even if the limit of 4500 boars that can be killed has not been reached, we cannot go beyond the hunting calendar but, on the recommendation of the citizens, we organize the selection hunt which requires the mandatory presence of a hunter and a wildlife guard.
Last year, 98 wild boars were killed in 200 selection hunts in this type of activity. Finally, I would like to highlight that in December 2010 the Liguria Region approved the guidelines for the regulation of the direct sale, starting from next season, of small quantities of meat by the hunter with the obligation of the buyer to carry out the tests for trichinellosis.
